Ever since I started my first semester and I was facing this real dilemma. Im still not sure about what should I go for! Im doing my Masters of Business but I haven’t still made up my mind whether I should go for a single (Marketing or HR) major, or have a combination of both but ending up with no major.
I have taken a course in Marketing, and not only completed it with a distinction but I really enjoyed it too! The only thing that scares me with the single major kinda thing is that I don’t want to be stuck and have to work in one field. I keep getting those ‘what if’ scenarios that drive me crazy and add to my confusion! What if i don’t like working in Marketing.. or what if I find HR boring!!
so can anyone especially those who -WORK (and not study, cause there’s a huge difference between the two) in Marketing or HR-, HELP, please!!
I can only help by telling you that my sister studies Computer Science, she worked in marketing for 2 years and now she’s become the HR manager at the same company and enjoys it a lot!!
Hope you get better help from the right people around you! Good Luck!!
ba7essek ktir btelba2i lal marketing field. ur outgoing, bubbly, creative and always on the lookout for new things.. (i used to work in both, w HR is not much fun, paper work ktir w ra7 tezha2i if ur like me w bit7ebbi il tejdeed u will deff enjoy marketing)
all the best
thanks nido! this is the problem many people would start with something and end up doing something else.. how would i know what would i enjoy, this or that :S !! Especially that my Bachelor degree was a mistake.. I didn’t and won’t work with it!
ProudPali .. :D this definitely helps! Yeah I like everything new, and I love the change! I also hate the routine.. this is why my options were either Marketing as a major, or a combination of Marketing and HR, but Im not considering to major in HR only.. not really!
my advice to you is:
Follow what your heart tells you. At the end of the day, Dima, studying one thing will not stop you from working in another feild.
So at least you will end up studying something you are pationate about
Frankly, Marketing is more exciting and more interesting than HR. If anything it has knowledge that can be easily transferred to some other areas of business. Unlike HR where you can only work in HR. It would provide you with a better understanding of your employees if you became a manager of people one day. But nothing that you wouldn’t already know with a couple classes in HR management which you will likely have in your graduate school regardless of your major.
I say, go for marketing! And learn the art of deceiving the customers and protect your self from being fooled by marketers :)
wonders.. yeah you’re right! it’s just that I don’t want to repeat my IT Bachelor degree scenario! I want to study something and work with it for a change.. but thanks anyway :)
Qwaider.. haha this won’t help.. Im a ‘Brand Name’ shopper! I don’t think anything can change that :$
In the marketing course last semester we were told a lot about manufacturers real cost and how much they profit.. and it didn’t affect me at all :$
i’m working in the marketing field now and i’m enjoying it
of course every field has it’s pros and cons..specially when u work with needy and spoiled customers..but still it’s fun…
I have been working in marketing for 3 years and i am telling you its nothing close to boring.. you never get stuck.. we offer strategic marketing and have so many diverse clients you have to shift gears all the time..
I start my morning with my medical labs client, then i receive a call from my automotive client, reply to an email from my cosmetics client, and end up in a meeting with my hotel, spa and resort client.. and somtimes my meetings are at the race track where I would be cheering for my rally driver client..
and this is just one day, you have to research and learn at least the basics of all these fields.. you learn more with every client and you never get bored.. its so much fun..
Good luck..
Oriental Arabesque.. it all has pros and cons, so I don’t want to have any expectations about anything.. what makes it hard is that I didn’t work in any of them.. but will see :) thanks anyway!
Princess N.. WOW! thanks a lot for your comment and welcome here :D
I love the way you pictured it.. sounds like lots of fun for me !!
This is why I need the opinion of people who works in the field, so that I’d get a better idea.. and probably some guidance!
In my experience, people who have no skills and who are unable to keep secrets, work in HR. People who have talent, who are creative and vibrant and who want a challenge, work in Marketing. But that’s just my own experience. ;-)
ummm, ok what if i am creative and vibrant but can’t keep any secrets :$ And i don’t like deception or trying to sell something that I, myself don’t believe in!!! This is getting complicated I guess.. :$
